What are cookies?

In computing, HTTP cookies (also known as web cookies, tracking cookies or simply cookies) are lines of text used to automatically authenticate, track Internet sessions and store information about visitors accessing the server, such as the most visited or favourite websites or, in the case of Internet shopping, the contents of their ‘shopping carts’.

Specifically, these are small text files that a server sends to a web client (usually a browser) and is then sent back (unchanged) by the client to the server each time the same part of the same web domain is subsequently visited.
Any domain visited with an Internet browser or any part of it can set cookies. Since a typical website, such as that of an online newspaper, contains objects from many different domains, each of which can set cookies, it is normal for several hundred cookies to be placed in the browser.

Control over cookies

You can control and/or delete cookies as you wish. You can find out how to do this here: aboutcookies.org . You can delete all cookies stored on your computer and set most browsers to prevent cookies from being stored. But then you may have to make some settings manually every time you visit a page and agree to certain features being compromised.
